Since Bahz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic,The Great Gatsby came out this year, it’s safe to say that vintage looks are going to be really popular this Halloween. This look is fun and glitzy and surprisingly easy to achieve.
Most of the makeup trends of this era aren’t too far off from what we wear now. The foundation for this look is basically a bold deep wine colored lip and cat eyes. The face should be monochromatic (no contouring) with a heavier blush.
If you have more time for your look there are ways to be more authentic. True finger waves are a PROJECT. Back in the day they didn’t have the luxury of irons so they had to improvise. Authentic finger waves generally have a wet appearance as well because they used a lot of product to get them to stay. In some old photos you will also see that the lips were done in a sort of permanent duckface (lol). This look can be achieved by putting concealer on the lips and then drawing smaller lips over. The effect is a kissy face without puckering.
Great Gatsby look-
What you’ll need: flat iron, hairspray, teasing comb, SHIT TONS of bobby pins, sparkly accessories
The top photo look is more time consuming than the bottom, mainly because you’ll have to create a faux bob if you don’t already have one. I used a flat iron to create the look of finger waves. Start right at the scalp (be careful it’s hot) and curve the flat iron back and forth in opposite directions all the way to the bottom. I’m assuming a three barrel roller would have the same effect (early 2000s throwback hair look).
Once you’ve created the illusion of finger waves on the top half of your hair, you’ll want to prepare the bottom half.

Here’s an excellent step by step with Lauren Conrad showing how to create the illusion of a bob. Her pin curls will take longer than the faux finger waves but will have an excellent hold.
If you have shorter hair you can make a little bun with the lower half to stick the pins into.
The more teasing you do to the underside and bottom of your hair the better it will stay. Seriously, damage your hair. Just do a deep conditioning the next day. 🙂
For the headband I actually used tulle because I couldn’t find any black ribbon. I also used an antique belt clip from my Great Grandmother for the sparkle in the middle. You can use ribbon or your own headband just make sure to add some sort of sparkle, feathers or lace. It can either go across the forehead or on top of your head. If you have a statement necklace you can also drape that on your head. The more sparkle the better!
Drape your neck in everyone pearl necklace or sparkly long necklace you have, the more the better. Remember, this was the roaring 20s! It was all about getting wasted and rolling around in diamonds.
For the outfit you can wear a flapper dress if you have time to get one. If not, something silky or lacy works. Go google some pics. Fur wraps or jackets work too.
Old Hollywood Glamour look (bottom pic in dramatic black and white for extra effect)-
It literally took me 10 minutes to do the hair! All you will need is your curling iron. If you have hot rollers that will work too!
Start with a deep part before you begin. When you are curling your hair you will want to hold the curling iron horizontally instead of vertically. Just roll up from the bottom up to nose or eye level. If you are using hot rollers make sure you roll them up too. Once you have done this all the way around just simply brush it out. The curls will smooth all together. Tuck one side behind your ear. If you have a sparkly clip you can use that to secure it.
Chandelier earrings are great for this look too. Complete the outfit with a slinky gown (old prom dress) and opera gloves. OR switch it up and go for a Mad Men inspired look. The nice thing about this hair is that it works with a lot of vintage looks.
If you have red hair PLEASE do Jessica Rabbit. All you need is a red gown and purple gloves.
Makeup- I didn’t change my makeup too much for these looks. For Hollywood glam you may want to do a sultrier eye (smoky eye). I used purple for the smoky effect. Just remember to do a cat eye. If you look at pics of Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby you will see that she has a very simple cat eye. For the lips it’s best to stick to a burgundy, which just happens to be super hot this fall! A red lip always works too!
